The Local History of Cabramatta, New South Wales
Cabramatta is a suburb located in the south-western region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The name Cabramatta is an Aboriginal word which means “at the place of plenty of water". The suburb covers an area of 5.1 square kilometres and is located 30 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district.
Aboriginal History
The traditional custodians of the land in Cabramatta were the Cabrogal people of the Darug nation. The area was rich in natural resources such as fresh water and game animals. The Cabrogal people lived in the area for thousands of years and had a deep spiritual connection to the land.
European Settlement
The first European to visit the Cabramatta area was the explorer George Bass in 1796. The area was not settled by Europeans until the early 1800s. The suburb developed as an agricultural district with dairy farms, orchards and vegetable plots. The Cabramatta railway station was opened in 1858, which made the suburb more accessible to the rest of Sydney.
